Kelly Manufacturing Company
is the manufacturer of the R.C.Allen instrument. KMC is the largest
manufacturer of general aviation aircraft instruments in the world
and has two manufacturing plants.
One is situated in the downtown area of Wichita, Kansas, and the
second is located in Grenola, Kansas. Both plants also operate FAA
licensed repair station's. R.C.Allen Inc. began as a can company
in the mid 1930's in Grand Rapids, Michigan and began manufacturing
business machines. Thousands of the sixty-year old cash registers,
adding machines and typewriters can still be found across the country.
World War II changed the company forever. Aircraft were needed for
the war and would have to be assembled at astonishing rates. Although
R.C.Allen was not specialized in the field, the company was uniquely
equipped to assemble the delicate instruments needed to fly the
airplanes. R.C.Allen began to manufacture Turn and Slip Indicators
and soon started filling government contracts. With specialized
engineers and blueprints, R.C.Allen instruments were soon being
installed on thousands of war bound aircraft. After World War II,
R.C. Allen continued as a major government contractor, and manufactured
instruments for the Korean War. Thousands of Rate Gyro Transmitters
were made for military jets during this period.
During peacetime, the company developed sub-miniature gyros for
Saturn rockets, and at one time, twenty of the special gyros were
in orbit at the same time. By 1972, R.C.Allen was the largest manufacturer
of aircraft instruments for general aviation in the world. In 1977,
R.C.Allen moved to Wichita, Kansas, the AIR CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.
Today the company retains its position as the industry's leading
manufacturer. The R.C. Allen instrument lines include Electric Attitude
Gyro and Directional Gyros, Air driven Artificial Horizons and Directional
Gyros, Turn and Banks, Turn and Slips, Turn Coordinators, Tachometers,
Engine Gauges ( voltmeters, voltammeters, oil temperatures and oil
pressure gauges, carburetor and outside air temperatures, suction
and cylinder head temperatures, cabin temperatures), a large line
of low and over voltage warning systems, battery probe assemblies
and inverters, along with numerous specialty items.
KMC produces instruments for aircraft, helicopters, and military
tanks. As history is made each day, KMC progresses on with new
technology for safer flight and for a safer nation.
